KREATIVE HØYSKOLECAMPUS OG MUSIKKSKOLE

Musikkhuset Soiva er en del av det nye kreative Arabiacampus for Metropolia Universitetet og Pop & Jazz Konservatorie (Arabia 135) i det gamle fabrikkvartalet i bydelen Arabia. Kaleidoscope har samarbeidet med Tommila Architects Oy om nybygget på 7 500 m2 i sentrum av Helsinki.

Arabiaprosjektet er delt i to faser, der fase 1. omfatter en rehabilitering av 15 000m2 eksisterende fabrikk- og undervisningslokaler til nytt høyskolekampus for kreative fag. Kaleidoscope har arbeidet i konsept- og skissefasen med kantine- og myldreområdet i bygningens kjelleretasje som kobler høyskolecampus (Fase 1) sammen med musikkhuset Soiva (fase 2), og har utarbeidet utarbeidet tidligfase illustrasjoner. Fase 1 var ferdigstilt i 2018. 

Soiva er Fase 2 i prosjektet, og omfatter et nybygg med 7 500 m2 lokaler for musikkundervisning. Bygningen rommer både klassisk musikk og pop&rock. Romprogrammet inkluderer flere musikksaler, flerfunksjonsrom, undervisningsrom og musikkstudioer. Kaleidoscope har i denne fasen samarbeidet med Tommila Architects i konsept- og skissefasen for å finne frem til byggets arkitektoniske uttrykk. Kaleidoscope utarbeidet tidligfase illustrasjoner, en designmanual for overordnede designgrep, og har hatt en hovedrolle i fasadeutformingen. I detaljprosjekteringsfasen har Kaleidoscope vært ansvarlig for skolecampusets helhetlige skiltplan og wayfinding-konsept, for Fase 1 og 2. Musikkhuset hadde byggestart august 2018 og var ferdigstilt november 2021.

Soiva betyr resonans eller musikalsk. Bygningen huser to musikkskoler, hvor det undervises i rytmisk og klassisk musikk. Institusjonene tilbyr lekeskole for barn og utdanning for amatører og profesjonelle studenter, alt fra instrumental og vokal musikk til musikkteknologi og produksjon. Både fasadene og interiøret spiller på musikksjangre, med det sorte fra rock’n’roll og med messing fra klassiske instrumenter. Rytmen til vinduene i det sorte murverket trekker referanser til musikalsk notasjon, og samtidig gjør hvert rom unikt. En forestillingssal åpner seg mot gaten med et stort vindu, og gjør musikk tilstede i det offentlige rom.

Innvendig har bygningen et sentralt atrium med flere mindre fellesrom hvor naturlig lys strømmer gjennom. Læringsrommene er arrangert rundt atriet, og får rikelig med dagslys og utsikt. Lydisoleringen er justeret slik at bygget er lydløst, men ikke stille, og skaper den viktige roen for å studere musikk. Cavernous studioer i kjelleren er innovativt designet mht musikkpedagogikk, med flere overvåkings- og redigeringsrom som plassert rundt opptaksrom slik at de kan brukes samtidig i ulike kombinasjoner.

Soiva er et nytt tilskudd til den historiske keramikkfabrikken i Arabia, en gang den største produsenten i Europa og internasjonalt kjent for sine design. Produksjonen har opphørt, men design og kultur består. Soiva kobles til et campus med kreative studier i den renoverte fabrikken og deler sine fasiliteter.

Kaleidoscope har vært engasjert som underleverandør til Tommila Architects, som har jobbet på oppdrag for Varma OYJ.

CREATIVE CAMPUS  AND MUSIC SCHOOL

The music schoolSoiva is part of the new creative Arabia campus for Metropolia University and the Pop & Jazz Conservatory (Arabia 135) in the old factory premises in the Arabia district. Kaleidoscope has collaborated with Tommila Architects Oy on the new building of 7 500 m2 in the center of Helsinki.

The Arabia project is divided into two phases, where phase 1 comprises a rehabilitation of 15 000m2 of existing factory and teaching premises into a new University campus for subjects within the creative fields. Kaleidoscope has worked in the schematic design and design development phases, exploring architecure concepts and making preliminary sketches and illustrations in particular for the canteen and social area in the building's basement floor which connects the University campus (Phase 1) with the Soiva music house (Phase 2). Phase 1 was completed in 2018.

Soiva is Phase 2 of the project, and includes a new building with 7 500 m2 premises for music education. The building accommodates both classical music and pop&rock. The room program includes several music halls, multi-function rooms, teaching rooms and music studios. In this phase, Kaleidoscope has collaborated with Tommila Architects in the concept and sketch phase to find the building's architectural expression. Kaleidoscope has worked primarily in the schematic design and design development phases, developed early phase illustrations, a design manual for overall design concepts, and has had a leading role in the facade design. In the detailed design phase, Kaleidoscope has been responsible for the school campus's overall signage plan and wayfinding concept, for Phases 1 and 2. The construction of Soiva started in August 2018 and the music house was completed in November 2021.

Soiva means resonance or musical. The building houses two music schools, where rhythmic and classical music is taught. The institutions offer play school for children and education for amateurs and professional students, everything from instrumental and vocal music to music technology and production. Both the facades and the interior play on musical genres, with the black from rock'n'roll and with brass from classical instruments. The rhythm of the windows in the black brickwork draws references to musical notation, and at the same time makes each room unique. A performance hall opens onto the street with a large window, making music present in the public space.

Inside, the building has a central atrium with several smaller common rooms where natural light flows through. The learning rooms are arranged around the atrium, and receive plenty of daylight and views. The sound insulation is adjusted so that the building is silent, and creates the important calm for studying music. Cavernous studios in the basement are innovatively designed in terms of music pedagogy, with several monitoring and editing rooms placed around the recording room so that they can be used simultaneously in various combinations.

Soiva is a new addition to the historic ceramic factory in Arabia, once the largest producer in Europe and internationally renowned for its designs. Production has ceased, but design and culture remain. Soiva connects to a campus of creative studies in the renovated factory and shares its facilities.

Kaleidoscope has been engaged as a subcontractor to Tommila Architects, who has worked on commission for Varma OYJ.
